Is My Pet Allergic to Me?

Is My Pet Allergic to Me?

Did you know that our pets can suffer the same allergies that we humans do?

It is normal for cats or dogs to get seasonal allergies from outside sources such as pollen, grass, mold, or fabric. More severe allergies can be caused by dust mites and fleas as well.

Although pet allergies from humans are highly unlikely to happen, it is possible. Dogs can be allergic to cat dander, people dander, and vice versa. Dander is composed of very tiny skin flakes shed by animals such as cats, dogs, birds, and other animals with fur. It could also be produced by humans, known as human dander or dandruff.

Can my pet get allergies from me?

When pets interact with an allergen, their body triggers histamine and other chemicals that create watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and rashes, according to Sandy Willis, a veterinary internist who advises the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Pets get allergies from humans, but this is not common since we often bathe and clean ourselves. If the allergic reaction from our furry friend happens, take note of the following: it may be caused by the strong scent of our perfume, soap, or laundry detergent since these chemicals contain many preservatives. Veterinarians can prescribe antihistamines for your cat if the allergy worsens.

If left untreated, some pets might develop asthma or allergic bronchitis. Human dandruff can trigger asthma in cats and other animals too. Studies show that asthma is more common in cats than dogs, so you need to keep this under control.

Thankfully today, human asthma treatments are being administered to animals as well. Doctors now use the anti-inflammatory medication in the form of aerosol chambers, as stated by Dr. Padrid, a veterinarian at Family Pet Animal Hospital in Chicago.

To conclude, while very uncommon, pet allergies are still a condition we must look out for. The best way to keep your pets happy and healthy is to eliminate the sources of the triggers mentioned above.
